Abstract

A number of myths have developed about the post industrial society and the information society. States what these are and attempts to challenge and refute them. With regard to the post industrial society, changes attributed to post industrialism are neither recent nor revolutionary. The myths to do with the information society which are challenged include the touting of universal electronic access as a laudible goal for librarianship, the claim that the information environment is a freer one than that of traditional print culture, and the assumption that the role of librarians in electronic access will serve democratic ends
