Abstract

Investigates the importance of audio and textual redundancy in a multimedia training program. The experiment was conducted at the University of South Florida in the summer of 1992. The subjects (100 students enrolled in an undergraduate microcomputers in education course) were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups. Each treatment group completed a computer based program with identical content in 1 of the following conditions: full text and totally redundant audio delivery, partial text with full audio delivery, or no text with full audio delivery. Major findings of this study were: there were no significant differences among the 3 treatment groups in achievement gain, there were no significant differences in the mean completion times across the 3 treatments, and students perceptions indicated a high degree of programme acceptance across all levels of treatment
