Abstract

The 3 revolutions currently in progress in the fields of information technology and biological and new materials share a common element which attempts to transcend the fields of science and technology to forge a unified approach to knowledge. This common element is information, which is treated, processed, manipulated and distributed. Information is a catalyst of industrial development. If we stop to consider the actual status of our societies, we realize that we are experiencing an aggressive dissemination of information. This has greatly reduced the the time lag between research activity and the exploitation of results. Ther can be no science and research without information, documentation and communication. This paper outlines trends in the field of information within the EC, describing some of the initiatives that have been undertaken to address the 1994-1998 programme
