Looks at the options for different types of the file formats for storing documents which contain more than just text, eg text. graphics, and layout. These are: page image which can be carried out using raster page images, and page description languages; storage of the layout of a document and the contents of that document separately as in the Open Document Architecture (ODA) standard; and structured information ie use of SGML. Discusses standards issues in using these formats
