Abstract

Abridged version of the Gerd Muehsam Award paper. Describes a project entitled Keywording for subject retrieval which addresses the problem of subject retrieval in visual resources collections by suggesting an application of hierarchic symbols and controlled vocabulary keywords in a single keyword field of a software program for cataloguing slides and photographs. The development of the system is based on: cataloguing procedures at Yale's slide and photograph collection; recent scholarship in the field; the potential and limitations of the Visual Resources Management Systems software program; the strengths and weaknesses of subject analysis systems; and subject retrieval needs as indicated in the Yale collection. Applicable components of available systems have been adapted and combined with other needed elements to create an efficient system
