Abstract

General review of current applications of geographic information systems (GIS), noting what features distinguish it from other branches of information technology, and its possible future use in humanities research. Discusses some of the spatial analysis techniques which may be applied to, and improved on, with the use of GIS. Concludes by discussing newer ways in which GIS may be applied to the humanities (particularly archaeology), such as predicative modelling, cost surface analysis, and landscape visivility analyses
