Abstract

ADONIS is a trial document delivery service supplying journals on CD-ROM published in 1987 and 1988. Its aim is to explore an alternative to storing and photocopying the paper issues. Libraries should save money, which can be shared with publishers in the form of licence fees. The Central Library of Medicine in Cologne is a test site. It has shown that the technology can work, but not without problems. Searching times are too long, the rate of unavailability of articles on disc is too high, the print-out quality should be improved and the journal titles should be more carefully selected. As yet the technology is neither cost-effective nor reliable. The ADONIS Board has decided to begin a fully operated ADONIS service in Jan 91, with 437 periodicals included, selected according to the demand by pharmaceutical companies. These will be scanned and stored on CD-ROM with up to 15.000 (later 50.000) pages per disc. The service will be aimed at the pharmaceutical industry and large document supply centres.
