Abstract

The Oxford English Dictionary is the authoritative dictionary of the English language. The machine-readable format utilising optical technology, duplicates the 1933 edition and provides enhanced access to more than 42 million words, 252.259 entries, and 1,86 million quotations. Examines advantages and problems of electronic access to the dictionary through the medium of CD-ROM, as well as public service implications within the context of a reference department in a research-oriented library. Describes the merits of the second edition of OED, which was published in Spring 89.
