Abstract
The WWW can be used to interface with database servers, thus allowing the searcher to use an off the shelf web browser to search for information on an unfamiliar database server. The Common Gateway Interface (CGI) is the most widely used technique to accomplish this purpose. CGI is a set of rules for passing information from a web server to an external program, which allows the passing of a search request to an external database service, which would otherwise not be web compatible, and the return of data which is then formatted for vieweing on the web browser. Outlines the advantages and limitations of this technique, describes some library applications and lists sources of information on CGI
