Abstract

The digital revolution and the convergence of information and communications technologies are triggering structural changes that affect both the economy and society and present Europe with a minor challenge. Describes the milestones in the outline of a European vision of the information society and draws attention to the Information Society Project Office, an instrument created by the European Commission (EC) to respond to the needs of member states. Argues that the key to success involves the deployment of technology based applications for the information society. Identifies 10 priority applications, outlines the EC contribution which will include initiative building and partnership building, and discusses key activities for promoting the applications
