Abstract

Discusses issues relating to the access and preservation of electronic publications with special reference to the German National Library, Die Deutsche Bibliothek (DDB) which has designed its technological infrastructure specifically to meet the requirements of future networking. Considers the factors which must be taken into consideration in order for DDB to fulfil its responsibilities as an electronic library, including ensuring the long term availability of electronic publications; and establishing precise bibliographic search terms to make controlled access possible. Discusses the tasks and responsibilities of librarians in the new world of digital information and the importance of training and education of librarians. Libraries will remain indispensable for society only as long as they possess both a powerful information infrastructure and a well qualified and highly motivated staff
