Abstract
The continual growth in the volume of bibliographical databases and the possibilities of augmenting databases through the development of suitable computer tools has led to problems over the quality of records making up the databases. Errors and inconsistencies accumulated in databases are affecting the quality of information storage and retrieval. Describes the problems posed by errors and duplication in the automation of the National Library of Spain where records from the retrospective conversion of manual catalogues were added to existing autoamted bibliographic records. Describes the development and use of a record clearing module which allows the massive processing od records, both interactively and in batches, and which has led to a reduction in such errors
