Abstract

The reference librarian as the greatest end user of the library catalogue, subject authority and information specialist, is admirably equipped to perform the role of cataloguer. Analytical indexing is essentially an enterprise of subject bibliography and examines 3 considerations upon which the difference between commercial indexes and local analytical indexing centres: choice of materials; subject analysis; and depth of indexing. Sets out arguments for embarking on an analytical indexing programme and advocates the integration of the conventional library catalogue and the subject bibliography
