Abstract

The Sport Database is one of the most popular information tools in the field of physical activity and sport, one reason being that its coverage is truly international. The main tool for maintaining the quality of the indexing and searching of the database is the Sport Thesaurus; which exists both in printed form (Sport Thesaurus 1994 ed.) and on CD-ROM (Sport Discus 1975-Jun 1995). These 2 versions of the same thesaurus differ substantially in parts, particularly since the insertion of the large database, SIRLS, into the Sport database. Analyzes the basic deficiencies of the thesaurus, traces their causes and proposes means for its improvement. Suggested improvements include: elaboration of basic conceptual and methodological principles; division of the total conceptual sphere of the thesaurus into parts; distribution of these parts between various sport information centres for editing; joint gathering together of these parts after editing; and permanent coordination between all participants in thesaurus correction
