Abstract

The exponential growth of globally networked information systems and the proliferation of end-user searching have made problems of information overload and getting lost in hyperspace quite dramatic. Unti recently, approaches to solving these problems have been for the most part technology driven. More flexible and prowerful database models have indeed gone a long way towards making networked information environments a less confusing place to work and communicate in. This technology-driven paradigm must be complemented with increased emphasis on the role of psychologically real processing of interacting with information systems. It is in the context of global hypertext environments that a theory of what users actually are involved in when they navigate in knowledge space.
