Abstract

Analyses, interprets and assesses S.R. Ranganathan's 5 laws of library science in the context of modern information technologies and their implications in society, with particular reference to the emergence of the virtual library. States the application of the 5 laws of library science and their interpretation in the virtual library environment. Assesses the laws and tests their validity in terms of independence and sufficiency. Concludes that they are not only valid and necessary requirements for the virtual library but 2 new laws are needed to fulfil the social and cultural tasks expected from the library of the future
