Abstract

Considers the impact and consequences of digitization on the form and content of public broadcasting and the resulting challenge for sound archives. These include the importance of the professionalization of archives; the growing need for more sophisticated information management to meet the demands of programme researchers; the ability of computers to hold not only written information but the sound and visual records themselves; external networking of information; and the complex decisions involved in safeguarding precious historical audiovisual material
