Abstract

The Louisiana Union Catalog (LUC), a cooperative bibliography of items on the subject of Louisiana, has been housed at the State Library of Louisiana since 1958. LUC Updates is a quarterly listing of all items newly added to the LUC, accompanied by an index and issued in printed form for libraries lacking access to OCLC. Prior to 1993 the LUC Updates were produced manually but since then entries to LUC have been maintained as MARC files in an electronic database (SuperCat) and concurrently maintained in a ProCite database which has been used for producing a printed version of the Updates and indexes. Describes the features of ProCite, a database management program and bibliography generator, how the software was customized and the manual editing needed as a result of the electronic transfer. The result of the conversion is an updated look, combined with the flexibility to manipulate records in ways not previously possible; an annual cumulative subject index with brief entries is now produced and an abridged version of the Updates is now available on the WWW
