Abstract

For the social worker standardized registration of client data is gaining importance, not only to serve the managers, policy makers and insurance companies, but also as an expression of social work as a professional activity. Outlines the core concepts involved in coding and classification in mental health care and social work and briefly describes the background and concepts of the ICD (International Classification of Diseases and Health Related Problems) and DSM (Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). Discusses the reasons for the introduction of classification schemes, their general characteristics and their benefits and possible pitfalls
