Welche Rolle spielt Erinnerung bei der Herausbildung kultureller Identitäten? Welche Formen kultureller Erinerung gibt es, wie werden sie organisiert, welchen Wandlungen sind sie unterworfen?. Diesen Fragen geht der Autor in einem Vergleich von 3 Mittelmeerkulturen des Altertums - Ägypten, Israel und Griechenland - nach, und er zeigt dabei, welche Bedeutung gerade die Erfindung und der Gebrauch der Schrift für die Entstehung früher Staaten haben
