Abstract
Das kürzlich ausgelaufene Fachinformationsprogramm der Bundesregierung definierte Fachinformation als denjenigen Teil des Wissens und der Information, der für den Fachmann bei der Bewältigung der anstehenden (beruflichen) Aufgaben nützlich sei. Knokreter gefaßt steht Fachinformation in erster Linie noch immer für Referatedienste, die für die Wissenschaft, die Forschung und Entwicklung (FuE) in der Wirtschaft konzipiert sind. Breiter gefaßt schließt der Begriff Volltextdatenbanken ein; diese können Fachzeitschriften, Patente, Gesetzestexte, Warenzeichen, Strukturformeln, Normen, Statistiken oder technische Kennwerte enthalten, und häufig werden auch Online-Wirtschaftsdienste, wie Börsendienste und Dienste von Auskunfteien dazugezählt. Elektronisch verfügbare Pressearchive fallen 'neuerdings' ebenfalls in diese Rubrik. All die genannten Dienste sind heute noch überwiegend über Datex-P und Hostrechner zugänglich. In jüngster Zeit sind sie immer häufiger auf optischen Speichermedien (CD-ROM) käuflich zu erwerben bzw. nutzen das Internet als Kommunikationsschiene
