Abstract
The study assessed the effectiveness of MeSH terms for retrieving medical monographs in an online catalogue; and the potential of the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) for improving the retrieval rate. Although MeSH terms alone retrieved over 60% of the relevant book titles, the capability to search under all the UMLS semantically related terms increased the recall rate significantly, particularly if the related terms included any more specific terms indented under the assigned term in the MeSH tree structure
