Abstract
Traces the growth of computerized information handling techniques in academic library reference services in the final decades of the 20th Century with particular reference to online databases and the Internet and WWW. Concludes that the pace of change is not likely to decelerate in the foreseeable future and thus the complexity and uncertainty of reference librarianship will increase
