Abstract

Contribution to an issue devoted to minimal-level cataloguing. Paper given as part of the programme 'More with less: minimal-level cataloguing of audiovisual materials' held during the 1990 American Library Association annual conference. Explores the evolution of audiovisual materials as important media. Discusses the tendency within the cataloguing community to treat these materials differently from print publications: give them less-than-full cataloguing. Discusses the impact of minimal-level cataloguing on the ability of the user to retrieve these materials. Cites examples where access to them is greatly impeded by the lack of added entries, subject headings and genre headings
