Abstract

In der Augennetzhaut läuft nicht alles parallel. Wissenschaftler des Max-Planck-Instituts für Hirnforschung in Frankfurt haben "verquere" Schaltungen zwischen Stäbchenrezeptoren und Zapfensehbahn entdeckt. In der Netzhaut der Augen sitzen zwei Sorten von Lichtsinneszellen: zum einen Zapfen, zuständig für Tageslicht und Farbensehen, zum anderen Stäbchen, die das Sehen in der lichtarmen Dämmerung übernehmen - wenn "alle Katzen grau" werden. Bisher galt, daß die Signale beider Rezeptortypen in nachgeschalteten Nervenzellen der Netzhaut seperat verarbeitet werden. Doch jetzt ist man am Max-Planck-Institut für Hirnforschung, Frankfurt/Main, auf "Brückenschaltungen" gestoßen, über die Signale von den Stäbchen in die Sehbahn der Zapfen laufen (PNAS USA 96, 14130-14135; 23. November 1999). Die Frage, ob diese Querverbindungen nur Überbleibsel der Evolution verkörpern oder gezielt das Dämmerungssehen optimieren, ist derzeit noch offen
