Abstract

Heinz von Foerster, Jahrgang 1911, gilt als der "Sokrates des kybernetischen Denkens". Nach dem Studium der Physik in Wien war er zunächst in verschiedenen Forschungslaboratorien in Deutschland und Österreich tätig, arbeitete nach Kriegsende kurzzeitig als Journalist und Berater einer Telefonfirma und schrieb sein erstes Buch Das Gedächtnis. Eine quantenmechanische Untersuchung. Er entwarf hier eine Theorie des Gedächtnisses, die die amerikanische Wissenschaftselite auf ihn aufmerksam werden ließ. Heinz von Foerster emigrierte im Jahre 1949 in die USA und arbeitete dort mit dem Erfinder des Computers, John von Neumann, den Anthropologen Gregory Bateson und Margaret Mead und dem Neuropsychiater Warren McCulloch zusammen. 1957 gründete er das inzwischen legendäre Biologische Computer Laboratorium, das zu einem Zentrum kognitionswissenschaftlicher Innovation wurde. Philosophen und Elektroniker, Biologen und Mathematiker, Künstler und Logiker diskutierten in der inspirierenden Atmosphäre dieses Instituts erkenntnistheoretische Fragen aus einer natur- und geisteswissenschaftlichen Perspektive. Sie befassten sich mit den Gesetzen des Rechnens in Menschen und Maschinen und analysierten die logischen und methodischen Probleme, die das Erkennen des Erkennens und die Beobachtung des Beobachters notwendig mit sich bringt. Es ist das Verdienst Heinz von Foersters, immer wieder auf die unvermeidlichen Voreingenommenheiten und die blinden Flecken dieses Beobachters aufmerksam gemacht zu haben, der sich dem vermeintlich von ihm unabhängigen Objekt der Beschreibung näher Mit Heinz von Foerster sprach Bernhard Pörksen
