Abstract

Cyberspace ist aus medienwissenschaftlicher Sicht nur am Rande interessant, aufschlußreicher ist die Diskussion über Cyberspace und wie sie geführt wird. In der anglo-amerikanischen Medien- und Kommunikationsforschung - und in Ansätzen auch hierzulande - hat sich in der Folge der sog. 'cultural studies' die Einsicht durchgesetzt, daß einzelne Medien und spezifische Medieninhalte für sich allein genommen noch keinen Sinn machen. Sie müssen einerseits als Ausdruck und Teil der gesellschaftlichen Kommunikationsverhaältnisse begriffen werden, da sie zu symbolischen Verständigung der Gesellschaft über sich selbst beitragen. Andererseits entsteht ihr Sinn erst, wenn ihnen die Menschen in ihrem Alltag Bedeutungen zuweisen, d.h. wenn die Medien und ihre Inhalte in den Alltag übernommen werden. Habermas hat in seiner "Theorie des kommunikativen Handelns" darauf hingewiesen, daß die Massenmedien als generalisierte Formen der Kommunikation den lebensweltlichen Kontexten verhaftet bleiben, aus ihm können sie nicht heraustreten. Der Sinn eines Phänomens wie Cyberspace ist so nur aus seiner spezifischen Verwendung in kommunikativen Handlungen zu erschließen
