Abstract
Die Geschichte wissenschaftlicher Information und Kommunikation war 1998 Thema einer von der American Society for Information Science und der Chemical Heritage Foundation in Pittsburgh, USA, durchgeführten Konferenz. Die Veranstalter planen im Jahre 2002 eine Nachfolgekonferenz unter dem Titel ,The Second Conference on the History and Heritage of Scientific and Technical Information Systems". Neben der Geschichte eigentlicher konventioneller und maschineller Informationssysteme soll auch die Rolle von Einzelpersonen ("Pioneers") und Institutionen bei der Entwicklung solcher Systeme in nationalem und internationalem Rahmen gewürdigt werden. Nach einführenden Gedanken zum Stellenwert der Geschichte wissenschaftlicher Information und Kommunikation stellt dieser Beitrag den Stand der Vorbereitungen zur Konferenz dar und gibt neben Ansatzpunkten für mögliche Forschungsbeiträge zur Geschichte des deutschen Informationswesens im 20. Jahrhundert auch einen Überblick über Ergebnisse eigener Forschungen zu den Beziehungen des Chemikers Wilhelm Ostwald zur Dokumentationsbewegung im ersten Drittel des Jahrhunderts
