Abstract

The Dewey Decimal Classification is caught between two schools of thought: - Those who think that classification numbers should never change, and that you should accommodate new subjects in the spaces between old numbers; and - Those who think that the whole scheme should be recast, to provide a more logical foundation, based on current knowledge, and to avoid cultural biases. The editors of the Classification and the Decimal Classification Editorial Policy Committee (EPC) try to steer a middle course between the two schools of thought. Thus they partially satisfy both, but fully satisfy neither. In particular, with each edition, there are what used to be called "phoenix schedules," and are now called "complete revisions."
