Geradezu zynisch ist es, wenn die Bibliothekare, die im Verlauf desTextes weitgehend als außenstehend behandelt wurden, auf einer der letzten Seiten doch noch zur Mitarbeit eingeladen werden. Dabei scheint diese Mitarbeit dringend nötig, da die Autoren bereits mit grundlegenden Begriffen und Aufgaben ihre Probleme haben: So durchsuchen nach ihrer Meinung WWW-Suchmaschinen Schlagworte, große Öffentliche Bibliotheken lagern ihre Bestände durchweg in Magazinen (gemeint sind die UniBibliotheken), und die Langzeitarchivierung scheint kein allzu großes Thema zu sein. Digitale Bibliotheken werden als Wirtschaftsbetriebe angesehen, die beispielsweise von Fachgesellschaften betrieben werden; in diesem Zuge wird der Gedanke eines freien Zugangs zu Informationen geopfert. Durch die gravierenden Mängel auf der Reflexionsebene und bei genuin bibliothekarischen Fragestellungen leistet das Buch nicht das, was es eigentlich hätte leisten können: eine umfassende, kompetente Darstellung des gesamten Themas. Vielleicht hätte das realisiert werden können, wenn man noch einen Fachmann/eine Fachfrau aus dem Bibliothekswesen mit zum Antorenteam dazu genommen hätte." - ZfBB 48(2001) H.3/4, S.248 (U.
