"Umfassendes Weltwissen vermittelt Microsofts Encarta-Enzyklopädie jetzt noch schneller: Anwender geben einfach den gewünschten Begriff in das neue Suchfeld in der Taskleiste ein und Encarta startet sofort mit dem passenden Artikel. Speziell für Kinder aufbereitet sind die leicht verständlichen Beiträge von Encarta Kids, dem integrierten Kinderlexikon. Im Umfang hat Microsoft Encarta 2005 etwas gegenüber der Vorjahresversion zugelegt. Den über 60 000 Artikeln entsprechen jetzt etwa 20 Millionen Wörter und knapp 25 000 Multimedia-Elemente wie Bilder, Videound Audioclips. Das ist eine gute Wissensreferenz, kommt jedoch nicht an den Umfang der englischen Encyclopaedia Britannica 2004 heran. Diese bietet Wissensdurstigen über 100 000 Artikel, denen 75 Millionen Wörter entsprechen - eine unerreichte Informationsfülle. Ansonsten findet der Anwender alles, was zu einer digitalen Enzyklopädie gehört: einen übersichtlichen und detaillierten Weltatlas, ein filterbares Historama, kleine Lernspiele, einen praktischen Rechercheassistenten sowie Online-Aktualisierungen bis Ende 2005 und Web-Links. Als reines Lexikon die bessere Wahl ist jedoch »Der Brockhaus multimedial« mit kürzeren Artikeln, aber mehr Einträgen. Für anspruchsvollere und auch akademische Recherchen eignet sich vor allem die englische Encyclopaedia Britannica. FAZIT: Wer eine leicht verständliche Enzyklopädie für den täglichen Bedarf sucht, ist mit Encarta gut bedient. Die Inhalte sind verlässlich und sehr einfach zugänglich."
