Abstract
Formale Erfassung wird auch als formale Analyse, Formalerschließung, Formalkatalogisierung, alphabetische Katalogisierung oder Titelaufnahme bezeichnet. Dabei wird der letzte Terminus nicht nur für den Vorgang der Erfassung verwendet, sondern kann auch sein Ergebnis beschreiben. Andere Bezeichnungen dafür sind Katalogisat oder Metadaten (Daten über Daten). Unter formaler Erfassung versteht man die konsistent nach bestimmten Regeln erfolgende Beschreibung und das Wiederauffindbar-Machen von Objekten nach äußerlichen, formalen Kriterien. Gegenstand einer formalen Erfassung können Objekte aller Art sein, also beispielsweise auch die Produktionspalette eines Industrieunternehmens. Im Informations- und Dokumentationswesen bezieht sich die formale Erfassung üblicherweise auf Dokumente (z. B. Druckschriften, audiovisuelle Materialien, Archivalien, Internet-Ressourcen, Museumsobjekte), wobei je nach Dokumenttyp unterschiedliche Merkmale zu erfassen sind. Die Formalerschließung stellt seit jeher eine zentrale Aufgabe von IuD-Institutionen dar. Sie bildet sozusagen das Fundament, auf dem die inhaltliche Erschließung aufsetzt. Diese erfolgt im deutschsprachigen Raum oft erst in einem zweiten, deutlich getrennten Arbeitsschritt. Im angelsächsischen Gebiet werden hingegen formale und sachliche Erschließung typischerweise gleichzeitig und durch denselben Bearbeiter vorgenommen.
