Abstract

Die Neurologen sind bereits kräftig daran, die Grundfesten unserer Glaubensgebäude zu erschüttern. Wer wissen möchte, weshalb diese Gebäude früher oder später einstürzen werden und was an ihrer Stelle errichtet werden wird, kann sich mit diesem Buch bestens darüber informieren. "Das Gehirn und sein Geist" ist der Titel einer Ringvorlesung, die im Wintersemester 1999/2000 in Göttingen durchgeführt wurde. In meiner Studienzeit habe ich eher schlechte Erfahrungen mit solchen Veranstaltungen gemacht, weil sie damals als Wettkampf inszeniert wurden. Vielleicht sind sie das noch heute. Aber zum Glück änderten die Bewertungskriterien. Verständlichkeit, Anschaulichkeit und Bezug zu andern Wissenschaften sind nun wichtiger als der Bluff mit Fachvokabularien. Und so wurde ein Informationsmittel geschaffen, das auch Laien einen Zugang zur Forschung erlaubt. In diesem Band sind 13 Referate aus Philosophie, Biologie, Psychologie, Psychiatrie, Musikwissenschaft und selbstverständlich Neurologie enthalten. Alles zusammen ergibt einen ersten Einblick in die faszinierende Welt der Neuronen, Synapsen und Dendriden. Besonders erwähnenswert ist die Gestaltung dieses Sammelbandes. Die Herausgeber haben die Mehrkosten nicht gescheut, die Illustrationen, Grafiken und farbige Bilder eben verursachen. Doch die Investition hat sich gelohnt. Bildhafte Veranschaulichung und durchaus verständliche Wissenschaftsprache ebnen dem Buch den Zugang zu einem breiten Publikum. Dass möglichst viele von diesem Angebot Gebrauch machen, wünsche ich ebenfalls. Denn in den nächsten Jahren muss ein minimaler Stand neurologischen Wissens in die allgemeine Wahrnehmung einfliessen, um wichtige Entscheide über die Zukunft fällen zu können. Grundlagenwissen also, wie es in diesem Buch vermittelt wird.
