Abstract

Librarians - especially catalog librarians - are the gatekeepers of knowledge. Today librarians are crucial in negotiating the interfaces between technology and cultural diversity. Projects such as the Luiseño Culture Bank indicate the possibilities opened up by the creative combination of existing techniques and new technologies; such combinations can ensure that libraries continue to provide wider access to wider audiences and a wider variety of sources of information. Libraries can play a role in enabling cultural projects quite far afield from those for which the Library of Congress classification system was originally created to support.
