Abstract
Die Bestrebungen für eine kooperative Erschließung der Handschriften in deutschen Bibliotheken begannen nach ersten Anfängen zur Jahrhundertmitte in den 1880er Jahren. In der Ära des Hochschulreferenten im preußischen Kultusministerium Friedrich Althoff trug man dem gestiegenen wissenschaftlichen Interesse an der bibliotheksübergreifenden Auswertung von Handschriften und Autographensammlungen Rechnung. Das erste Projekt wurde von dem Mediävisten Wilhelm Meyer in Göttingen durchgeführt, kam aber innerhalb von sechs Jahren nicht über drei Bände hinaus. Erst im Zeichen einer systematischen Zentralisierung der Bibliothekspolitik im Nationalsozialismus wurden solche Bemühungen nach 1938 wieder aufgenommen, aber bis zum Kriegsende konnten erneut nur wenige Bände erscheinen. In dem Beitrag werden erstmals Aktenbestände des preußischen Kultusministeriums aus dem Geheimen Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz in Berlin sowie zeitgenössisches Schrifttum ausgewertet. Dabei werden bibliothekarische, wissenschaftsgeschichtliche und wissenschaftspolitische Hintergründe der Erschließungsvorhaben in Deutschland vor 1945 beleuchtet.
