Abstract

How can we communicate the essence of still images such as photographs in ways that enable potential users to discover the material and to decide whether it meets their needs? This paper examines six critical features of photographs that should be reflected in cataloging, making some comparisons between the cataloging of textual archival and manuscript materials and the cataloging of visual materials. It discusses the role of the catalog record in the work of the repository, and goes on to describe tools recently developed for describing and indexing historical or original visual materials.
