Abstract

Authority control is an essential component of the retrospective conversion process. Libraries contemplating authority control in this context need to consider the source of the converted records, the nature of the collection being converted, when and by whom the source records were cataloged, and the extend to which the the converted records should approach logical authority control standards. Choices for processing these records include manual and machine techniques or a combination of the two, while the actual work may be done in-house, by a vendor, or by dividing the work between local staff and a vendor. Decisions on which techniques and approaches to use will depend on local resources and standards
