Abstract

Eine wohl einzigartige Einrichtung im deutschsprachigen Raum beherbergt die Universitätsbibliothek Freiburg: das 1956 gegründete Geologenarchiv, das die Nachlässe und Autografen berühmter und weniger bekannter Geologen enthält. In jenem Jahr beauftragte die Geologische Vereinigung den Freiburger Professor für Geologie und Paläontologie, Max Pfannenstiel (1902-1976), mit dem Aufbau einer derartigen Sammlung. 1972 wurde sie von der Geologischen Vereinigung in das Eigentum der UB Freiburg übertragen mit der Verpflichtung, die Bestände zu verwahren, zu erschließen und für Benutzer zugänglich zu machen. Obwohl die Sammlung daher nicht von Beginn an im Besitz der UB war, kennzeichnet das vergangene Jahr 2006 aber das fünfzigjährige Bestehen des Geologenarchivs in Freiburg, ein Jubiläum, dessen in einer kleinen Feierstunde an der Universitätsbibliothek gedacht wurde. Streng genommen handelt es sich um die Gründung des zweiten Geologenarchivs bzw. seine Wiedergründung, denn die Idee, ein Archiv der Geologie anzulegen und damit zugleich die Geschichte des Wissenschaftsfaches zu dokumentieren und in Zeugnissen zu bewahren, ist wesentlich älter: Sie stammt von dem Berliner Geologen Prof. Erich Haarmann (1882-1945), der während seines über 35-jährigen Berufslebens eine für die Geschichte der Geologie damals einmalige Sammlung von Dokumenten mit über 25.000 Handschriften, Tagebüchern etc. aufbauen konnte. Die Sammlung fiel jedoch 1943 einem Fliegerangriff in Berlin zum Opfer, der Neubeginn gelang erst 1956 mit dem Auftrag an Max Pfannenstiel. Heute ist der Bestand, der zu den Historischen Sammlungen der UB Freiburg gehört, auf eine Größe von über 100.000 Dokumenten angewachsen. Hierzu zählen vor allem Briefe, Manuskripte, Urkunden, Fotografien, Feldbücher und biografische Drucksachen vorwiegend aus dem deutschsprachigen mitteleuropäischen Raum. Die Sammlung wächst ständig weiter durch Schenkungen, zu dem umfangreichen Material gehören ebenfalls Zeichnungen, Karten, Medaillen etc.
