Abstract
Die digitale Technik spaltet die Gesellschaft psychologisch in zwei Lager. Das Alltagsleben wird zunehmend durchdrungen von digitalen Medien, aber mindestens unterschwellig sind die Haltungen gegenüber den »Maschinenwesen« polarisiert. Auf der einen Seite sind Ängste und starke Skepsis wahrnehmbar, andererseits triumphieren Technolust und Technikeuphorie. Es lohnt sich, die Heilserwartungen und Untergangsszenarien zu hinterfragen, nicht zuletzt machen sie deutlich, wie fundamental die Erwartungen an die »digitale Revolution« auseinanderdriften. Der Berliner Wissenschaftler Olaf Eigenbrodt, zu dessen Forschungsinteressen Fragen der Bibliothekssoziologie gehören, zeigt in seinem Beitrag anhand historischer und aktueller Befunde auf, wie solche gesellschaftspsychologischen Spaltungen entstehen und wozu sie dienen können: In beiden Haltungen steckt Potenzial, um neue Technik sinnvoll in die Lebenswelt zu integrieren.
