Abstract
Der ungehinderte Zugang zur wissenschaftlichen Publikation ist eine entscheidende Voraussetzung für die Forschung. Auf dem Hintergrund der Konzentration des Verlagswesens und der Verteuerung insbesondere der Zeitschriftenliteratur setzt sich die Open-Access-Bewegung für den kostenfreien Zugang zu Publikationen aber auch zu Forschungsdaten, Software und Digitalisaten von Kulturgut ein. Unterschiedliche Businessmodelle (originäre oder Postprint-Bereitstellung auf Open-Access-Servern von Institutionen oder Fachgruppen; author pays statt oder (hybrid) verbunden mit Subskription) bieten einen breite Palette auch kommerzieller Open-Access-Publikationsmöglichkeiten. Dabei ist die Bereitschaft der Fördereinrichtungen, Publikationskosten als Teil der Forschungsmittel anzusehen von zukunftsweisender Bedeutung. Noch offen ist, ob der kostenfreie Open-Access-Zugang öffentlich geförderter Forschungsergebnisse durchgesetzt werden kann. Der ungehinderte Zugang ist eine wichtige Voraussetzung der zukünftigen E-Science-Forschungsumgebungen, die neue Formen der wissenschaftlichen Arbeit auf dem Hintergrund vernetzter Kommunikation und Datenbereitstellung anbieten. Gestützt wird Open Access auch durch kommerzielle Neuansätze wie die Google-Strategie, über die Bereitstellung von gescannter Literatur zusätzlichen Traffic auf seine Angebote zu lenken, um höhere Werbeeinnahmen zu erzielen.
