Abstract
Sir Karl Poppers normative Forderung nach dem öffentlichen Charakter der wissenschaftlichen Methoden geht von der Überzeugung aus, dass die anzustrebende "Objektivität" der wissenschaftlichen Methoden nicht individuell zu bewerkstelligen sei, sondern durch öffentliche Kontrolle und Kritik zustande kommt. Robert K. Merton stellte vier Postulate des Wissenschaftsethos auf: Universalismus, Kommunismus, Uneigennützigkeit und organisierter Skeptizismus. Papierjournale gelten vielfach als harter Kern, als Rückgrat der Wissenschaftskommunikation. Ihre Funktionen im Rahmen wissenschaftlicher Kommunikationsprozesse können im Wesentlichen als Kontrolle der Kommunikation beschrieben werden. Die digital gestützte Wissenschaftskommunikation hat gegenüber konventionellen Papierformen etliche Vorteile. Die Zukunft von "Open Access" hängt u.a. davon ab, ob die dargestellten Funktionen konventioneller kostenpflichtiger wissenschaftlicher Papierjournale tatsächlich für den wissenschaftlichen Erkenntnisfortschritt unverzichtbar sind; wenn ja, ob sie sich durch innovative digital unterstützte Open-Acccess-Kommunikationsformen ersetzen lassen.
