Abstract
Als Vicki Myron an einem kalten Januarmorgen die Tür der Stadtbücherei von Spencer, Iowa, aufschließt, nimmt sie ein sonderbares Geräusch wahr. Bei genauerem Hinhören glaubt sie ein Miauen zu erkennen, das aus dem Kasten für zurückgegebene Bücher dringt. Und tatsächlich findet die Bibliothekarin zu ihrer großen Überraschung zwischen Klassikern und Liebesromanen ein halb erfrorenes Katzenjunges mit struppigem Fell. Vicki und ihre Kollegen kümmern sich um das kleine Tier, wärmen es und geben ihm zu fressen. Damit ist das Kätzchen, das sich bald als Kater entpuppt und den Namen Dewey erhält, adoptiert. Dewey offenbart schon rasch seine ungewöhnliche Wirkung auf Menschen: Er tröstet verzweifelte Einwohner, er heitert die Angestellten auf, indem er mit ihnen Verstecken spielt, er bringt traurige Kinder zum Lachen. Schnell spricht sich die Geschichte des einfühlsamen Katers herum, bis schließlich Fernsehteams aus der ganzen Welt anreisen. Als Dewey im Winter 2006 im stolzen Katzenalter von 19 Jahren stirbt, ist er eine internationale Berühmtheit. Und die Begeisterung für den außergewöhnlichen Kater ist ungebrochen. Das Leben der berühmtesten Katze der Welt wird verfilmt mit Meryl Streep in der Hauptrolle. Sie spielt Vicki Myron, Deweys »Mutter« und Autorin unseres Buches.
