Abstract
Die Zukunft deutscher mittelständischer Unternehmen wird auch davon abhängen wie gut diese, das für sie relevante Wissen systematisch nutzen. Trotzdem wird der externen Informationsbeschaffung als Bereich des Informations- und Wissensmanagements nur wenig Aufmerksamkeit geschenkt. Es gibt jedoch eindeutige Erfolgsfaktoren und Barrieren im Umgang mit externen Informationen für mittelständische Unternehmen. Die Bedeutung von Informationen als Rohstoff für Entscheidungsprozesse wird nicht unterschätzt, vielmehr der Bedarf an strukturierter Informationsversorgung. Es gibt jedoch einen positiven Zusammenhang zwischen der Nutzung von qualitätsgeprüften, externen Informationsquellen und den Bereichen der Internationalisierung, des Innovationsmanagements und der Marktund Wettbewerbsanalyse.
