Describes the NISO/ANSI standard Z39.50, which offers a common command language for use with information retrieval systems. Lists 9 projects which are currently developing Z39.50 systems, and gives advantages of the configuration. Suggests directions in which libraries should be moving to best plan for the future of more universal connectivity
