Abstract
Die aktuellen Entwicklungen im Bereich des Internets machen auch vor (kontrollierten) Vokabularien nicht halt. Im Bereich der Wissenschaft und Kultur sind zentral geführte Wortverzeichnisse von eminenter Bedeutung denkt man beispielsweise an die in der Biologie verwendeten Systematiken. In Netzwerken und Datenverbünden kann die Verwendungen einheitlicher Begriffe durch Methoden der Informationstechnik (IT) gut unterstützt werden. Zentral geführte Vokabularien können über das Internet auf dem Wege von "WebServices" abgerufen und auch an verschiedenen Stellen repliziert und angeboten werden. Dabei gewinnt der Service-Charakter an Bedeutung und bewirkt, dass kulturelle und wissenschaftliche Einrichtungen für die Nutzung von Vokabularien keine eigene IT-Infrastruktur mehr aufbauen und bereithalten müssen. Im Rahmen verschiedener Forschungsprojekte vor allem im Context der EU-Förderprogramme hat AIT Angewandte Informationstechnik Forschungsgesellschaft in Graz WebServices aufgebaut, anhand repräsentativer Daten erprobt und im Rahmen spezieller Informationssysteme zu einem regelmäßigen Einsatz gebracht. Einsatzbereiche sind beispielsweise inhaltsbezogene Dokumentationstätigkeiten oder (thesaurusunterstützte) Abfragesysteme multilingualer Datensammlungen.
