Abstract

Scientific collaboration and the generation of academic knowledge are experiencing a significant enhancement with new technologies of communication and collaboration - in particular with so-called web 2.0 tools. Web 2.0 tools claim to improve social collaboration in many ways: collaboration becomes more democratic, interdisciplinary, non-hierarchical, global, and transparent. However, the introduction of these new tools in the academic world faces a series of challenges and problems, such as usability issues and reservations regarding the process of open collaboration. In our contribution, we will exemplify the advantages and the limits of working with web 2.0 tools in academia on the basis of a wild-based epistemic community. The UN Studies Association is an interdisciplinary expert community which cooperates via the wiki technology. The wild has been a vital instrument for the community-building process, serving as official website, project planning and management tool as well as knowledge base. After a brief introduction of the main features of the UN Studies wiki portal, the authors will discuss following aspects: How can wikis contribute to knowledge generation and systematization What are the innovative aspects of wiki-based social collaboration and knowledge production, what are the limits?
