Heutzutage machen solche Forscherinnen und Forscher Karriere, die besonders viele Steuermittel für ihre Forschung ausgeben und die Ergebnisse dieser Forschung besonders gut an Ex-Wissenschaftler vermarkten, ungeachtet der Verlässlichkeit ihrer Ergebnisse. Diese historisch gewachsene Infrastruktur schadet der Wissenschaft in mehrfacher Hinsicht. Zum einen werden Steuermittel verschwendet, anstatt sie effizient einzusetzen. Zum anderen werden Wissenschaftler auf Dauerstellen berufen, deren Qualifikation nur indirekt überprüft wurde. Zum Dritten leiten die gut vermarkteten, aber weniger verlässlichen Forschungsergebnisse die Wissenschaft in die Irre und unterminieren das Vertrauen der Öffentlichkeit in den Wissenschaftsbetrieb. Eine Lösung dieser Krise wäre es, alle Zeitschriften-Abonnements aufzulösen und mit den eingesparten Mitteln eine wissenschaftlich abgesicherte, transparente und nachhaltige Infrastruktur zu implementieren, die nicht nur durch die erhöhte Zugänglichkeit und Transparenz der wissenschaftlichen Literatur deren Verlässlichkeit erhöht, sondern gleichzeitig Steuermittel einspart und dabei noch wissenschaftliche Daten und Quellcode nachhaltig archiviert und zugänglich macht.
