Abstract

Im Mai 1897 wurde in Charlottenburg bei Berlin das Wissenschaftlich-humanitäre Komitee (WhK) gegründet. Die weltweit erste, bis 1933 bestehende Homosexuellenorganisation wurde langjährig vom Arzt und Sexualforscher Magnus Hirschfeld (1868-1935) geleitet und trat für die Entkriminalisierung gleichgeschlechtlicher Handlungen zwischen Männern ("widernatürliche Unzucht" nach § 175 des deutschen Reichsstrafgesetzbuches) ein. Zu diesem Zweck legte das Komitee eine beständige Petitionstätigkeit an den Tag und leistete eine breit angelegte Aufklärungs- und Beratungsarbeit.1 Entsprechend dem Motto "Durch Wissenschaft zur Gerechtigkeit" war das Komitee außerdem als wissenschaftliche Forschungsstätte tätig, die sich der Erforschung aller "sexuellen Zwischenstufen", besonders der Homosexualität, widmete, und ihre Forschungsergebnisse geltend machen wollte, um Sexualreform voranzutreiben.
