Doch Milliarden von uns können sich kaum den Luxus leisten, sich mit den drängenden Fragen der Gegenwart zu beschäftigen, weil wir Dringenderes zu erledigen haben. Leider gewährt die Geschichte keinen Rabatt. Wenn über die Zukunft der Menschheit in unserer Abwesenheit entschieden wird, weil wir zu sehr damit beschäftigt sind, unsere Kinder zu ernähren und mit Kleidung zu versorgen, werden wir und sie dennoch nicht von den Folgen verschont bleiben. Dieses Buch versorgt die Menschen nicht mit Kleidung oder Nahrung. Aber es kann helfen, die Dinge ein wenig klarer zu sehen, und damit das globale Spielfeld etwas einebnen. Wenn es auch nur ein paar mehr von uns in die Lage versetzt, sich an der Diskussion über die Zukunft unserer Spezies zu beteiligen, so hat es seine Aufgabe erfüllt.

Jahrhundert« sollen eine »globale Agenda« darstellen. Das Buch ist aus Vorlesungen, Lektionen und vor allem Diskussionen mit Studenten, Journalisten und Kollegen hervorgegangen. Es zeigt erneut, wie dringlich Hararis Anliegen ist. Die Geschichte gewährt eben keinen Rabatt. Zunächst geht er einen Schritt rückwärts, von seiner düster beschriebenen Zukunft zurück in die Gegenwart, von den sterilen Labors und Big-Data-Algorithmen zum »Hier und Jetzt« und der unmittelbaren Zukunft menschlicher Gemeinschaften. Noch einmal, etwas präziser, aber auch optimistischer, benennt er die technologischen, politischen und die globalen Herausforderungen. Dass er das Buch im Kapitel »Meditation« mit persönlichen Bekenntnissen beendet, erstaunt. »Ein paar Jahre oder sogar Dekaden« gesteht er den Menschen am Schluss noch zu, sich selbst zu erforschen, ihrem Leben Sinn und Identität zu geben - oder, sagen wir es einfacher, Menschen zu bleiben."
