Abstract

Archie servers provide access over the Internet to computer software (public domain and shareware), source code, electronic documents, graphics and data sets. Archie is an online union catalogue of 'electronic' holdings of many anonymous File Transfer Protocols archives sites available on the Internet. It indexes some 1.300 sites worldwide. Gives a history of Archie. Describes how to access Archie interactively via a telnet session, through logging on to an Archie server; interactively but remotely using local client software and via an electronic mail interface as a batch process. Explains how Gopher servers work on the Internet and how to locate software descriptively through Archie in conjunction with the What is keyword index
